If you own a firearm, you want to protect your investment from thieves. And as a gun owner, it’s your responsibility to keep your guns from ending up in the hands of a child – or a criminal. That’s why we decided to review the best gun safes we could find.

Along the way, we looked at several factors: we searched for the best cheap gun safe, best fireproof gun safe, the best handgun safe, the top rated gun safes, and, of course, the best gun safes for the money. We even looked at hundreds of other articles on the topic to get the best information possible.

We’ve also mixed things up, by including a combination of electronic and analog or combination locks. This is just a matter of personal preference, but it’s something that a lot of people feel strongly about one way or the other, so we wanted to provide options for people on both sides of the fence.

Are you ready to find the best home gun safe?

Let’s get started!

The Steelwater GSLD593924-BLK is one of the few affordable long gun safes that’s really worth looking at. It holds up to 39 long guns, and includes a door organizer with 6 handgun holsters. It also offers a full 60 minutes of fire protection at 1875 degrees, which is better than a lot of more expensive safes.

Pros:

  • Reasonably priced
  • Good fire resistance

  • Relatively lightweight door

The Steelwater GSLD593924-BLK may not have the snappiest name, but it’s a fantastic gun safe for the price.

8. SecureIt Tactical FAST Box Model 47

GunSafes.Com

The SecureIt Tactical FAST Box Model 47 can be used under the bed, or mounted upright as an armory locker.

Key Features:

  • Holds 1 long gun and 1 handgun
  • Measures 47” high x 6 ½” wide x 13” deep
  • Weighs 47 pounds
  • Electronic lock with key bypass
  • Felt padding on sides
  • Optional vertical mounting kit

The SecureIt Tactical FAST Box Model 47 is an electronic gun safe with a slim, flat profile. This allows you to store your AR under your bed for easy access, along with a pistol. Alternatively, you can mount it upright and use it as a locker. In this configuration, it will hold two AR-style rifles.

From here on out, we’re looking at safes that provide, at best, a fig leaf of protection from a thief who’s targeting your firearms. This is for keeping your gun safe from kids, and making sure a casual burglar can’t gain easy access.

Pros:

  • Can be used under the bed or as a locker
  • 2 rifle safe capacity when mounted vertically

Cons:

  • Not secure against a determined thief

This gun safe box is a great way to secure your AR directly under your bed.

  • Quick access
  • Weighs 31 pounds
  • Biometric lock with key bypass
  • Felt padded interior
  • Includes mounting hardware
  • Can be programmed for up to 30 fingerprints

The Barska AX11224 is a biometric gun safe that can be programmed for up to 30 fingerprints. That’s enough for both of your hands, both of your partner’s hands, and ten more to spare. If the batteries die, there’s a pair of backup keys for salvaging your guns.

This biometric gun safe is a great choice for shelves or under the bed. However, at 7 ¾ inches high, it’s too tall to fit in most bedside table drawers.

Pros:

  • Good choice for couples
  • Fits under the bed or on virtually any shelf

Cons:

  • Too tall to fit in most drawers
  • Not secure against a determined thief

This biometric gun safe can be programmed for up to 30 fingerprints.

10. Barska AX11556

GunSafes.Com

The Barska AX11556 is a biometric safe that comes ready for mounting to a shelf or bedside table, and includes mounting hardware.

Key Features:

  • Holds 2 full frame handguns
  • Measures 14 ¾” wide x 11 ¾” deep x 5” high
  • Weighs 31 pounds
  • Biometric lock with key bypass
  • Felt padded interior
  • Pre-drilled for mounting
  • Includes mounting hardware
  • Can be programmed for up to 30 fingerprints

The Barska AX11556 is another Barska biometric safe with a key backup. While this one is still big enough for 2 full frame handguns, it’s short enough to fit in virtually any nightstand or desk drawer making it a good option for pistol safes. Alternatively, you can mount it on a shelf or a dresser for easier access.

Pros:

  • Great for drawers or shelves
  • Good choice for couples

Cons:

  • Not secure against a determined thief

This psitol safe’s a solid choice for quick access in a bedside table or desk drawer.

11. SnapSafe Key Lock Box

SnapSafe Key Lock

SnapSafe Key Lock Box

CLICK FOR BEST PRICE

GunSafes.Com

The SnapSafe Key Lock Box is designed to look like a standard security box.

Key Features:

  • Holds 1 compact handgun
  • Measures 6 ½” wide x 9 ½” deep x 1 ¾” high
  • 16 gauge steel construction
  • Weighs 4 pounds
  • Basic key lock
  • Foam padded interior
  • TSA-approved
  • Includes security cable

The SnapSafe Key Lock Box isn’t actually a safe. It’s a lock box, and it’s barely large enough for a compact pistol but it is great for quick access. This isn’t designed for storing in your house, but as a discrete travel case for keeping your pistol safe. It includes a security cable, which can be fastened around the frame of a car seat or a hotel bed frame.

This may not be the best choice for use around the house, but it does something no other safe on our list does: it’s TSA-approved for airline travel. This makes the SnapSafe ideal for travelers.

Pros:

  • Small, lightweight, and discreet
  • Great for storing your gun in your car
  • Good option as far as pistol safes go

Cons:

  • Protects your gun from kids, not thieves

While it’s not, strictly speaking, a safe, this lock box is a good way to store your gun inside your vehicle.

Bottom Line

As you’ve probably noticed, the best gun safe brands tend to run on the expensive side. That’s to be expected. Thieves are becoming more sophisticated by the day, and top manufacturers are constantly adding new features to keep your firearms out of the wrong hands. And a safe that doesn’t protect your guns and therefore home security is just wasted money. As a result, the best budget gun safe isn’t necessarily going to be the best value gun safe.

You’ve probably also noticed that a few of these safes need to be custom built. This leads to longer shipping times, but it’s a reality of the business. The fact is, there just isn’t a predictable enough demand for these kinds of high end safes for manufacturers to mass produce them.

We hope our gun safe reviews were helpful and informative. Now it’s up to you to decide which one is right for you, your home, and your guns. Be sure to keep your gun safe organized and consider investing in dehumidifers to keep moisture out of your safe!
