If you’re north of six feet and weigh more than 250 pounds, you know how hard it is to find clothes and shoes that fit. You also know what it’s like to sit in a car that’s uncomfortably small to drive, even when you’ve got the seat pushed all the way back. So how on Earth are you supposed to find a kayak that works for you?
We’ve searched the web to find the best kayak for big guys. We set a 300-pound capacity as our minimum, although a larger kayak, 400 lb capacity or more, scored better with us. A beefy, 500lb capacity kayak or greater would score highest of all.
Several big man kayak options are actually 2-person kayaks. That’s okay. We’ve looked for options with large footwells or removable seats so you can paddle from the back, as well as for wide kayaks that allow you to enjoy plenty of legroom.

Key Features
- Lightweight
- One-handed rudder control
- Large front and rear
- Ergonomic mesh
It’s a lightweight kayak that is easy to carry over long distances to access more remote bodies of water. As it is super light, it is highly responsive to paddle strokes and glides easier in the water than a comparable heavy kayak.
Though kayaking is all about the water, you’ll need a sturdy vessel, especially if you are on the larger side. This kayak is sturdy enough to fish from even while standing. While a kayak in every sense of the word is a small watercraft, this kayak is spacious, giving you ample storage and room to customize to fit your needs.
Pros
- Superior stability
- Extra storage under the seats
- Easy to handle
Cons
- Some reviewers felt the pedal drive was ineffective
For a luxury experience, the compact drink holder prevents spills, and there are four built-in rear rod holders for hands-free storage while paddling. This is a sturdy beast of a kayak.

- Weighs 21 pounds
- Weight capacity of 400 pounds
- Includes collapsible paddle, hand pump, and carrying case
- Built-in cup holder
The Sevylor Quikpak K1 is a rare sit on top kayak that’s also inflatable. In and of itself, this isn’t unusual, but your typical sit on top inflatable kayak is built like a pool raft and is relatively unstable. The Quikpak K1 is designed with a similar, platform-style design, but it has adjustable kayak seats, as well as scalloped foot cutouts just like a solid frame sit on top kayak.
That said, this kayak isn’t designed to handle rapids. Much like a traditional, solid frame sit on top kayak, it’s designed for relaxing in calm waters, not for navigating rapids or choppy conditions. It features a built-in cupholder that suits this laid-back purpose, and it runs surprisingly dry since any splashes will drain off the side. It’s also lightweight, tipping the scales at a scant 21 pounds.
Pros
- Lightweight design
- Puncture and scrape-resistant bottom
- Affordable
Cons
- Not suitable for choppy water
This sit on top kayak is very easy to get on and off of.

- Weighs 52 pounds
- Weight capacity of 550 pounds
- Includes carrying case and repair kit
- Rigid aluminum bow and stern frames
This is the bigger, better version of the AdvancedFrame kayak we just looked at, with a beefed-up weight capacity of 550 pounds. If you’re using it as a single kayak, simply remove the front seat and move the back seat as far forward as possible. Alternatively, you can go kayaking with your child or a petite partner.
This kayak is similar to the smaller AdvancedFrame in that it’s very heavy. At 52 pounds, it’s really pushing the boundaries of how portable a “portable” kayak can be. But that’s just the price you pay for a sturdy frame and a rigid design. Speaking of price, you’ll also be spending a bit more on this kayak than you would on many others, but the unique features are well worth the investment.
Pros
- Rugged and durable
- Large weight capacity
- Lots of room for storage
- Great straight-line speed
- Rated for rapids and marine conditions

The Intex Explorer K2 is a beginner’s inflatable kayak that’s very reasonably priced. It’s not designed for durability and will wear out and start leaking within a few years of use. That said, it’s a solid choice for beginners, if only because of the low price. You can use it for practice, to get an idea of what you like and don’t like, and to make a more educated decision on your next purchase.
This kayak is designed to be used on calm lakes and lazy rivers, and will quickly get swamped in rapids or choppy water. That said, it’s also a great choice for use in foggy weather. A high visibility yellow shell makes it easy to see from a long distance, even when visibility is poor.
Pros
- Stable and difficult to capsize
- Runs fast in a straight line
- High visibility color
- Inexpensive
Cons
- Not rated for choppy water

It features a pair of recessed fishing rod holders, one on each side of the boat, just behind the front seat.
If you’ve removed the front seat to drive from the back, this makes them well positioned for just about any fishing technique, including trolling.
This kayak also features a removable, inflatable child booster seat. You can teach your child to fish, or just take them out on the water for a nice day of paddling and sunshine.
Pros
- Designed for anglers
- Large amount of storage space

The aluminum frames collapse for easy carrying, so you can bring the AdvancedFrame anywhere you’d take your traditional inflatable kayak.
The aluminum frame gives this kayak a sharp, rigid prow that cuts through the water like a hot knife through butter. This allows for excellent straight line speed, as well as providing plenty of stability while you’re paddling forward. The weight capacity is only 300 pounds, which is a concern for larger men, but it does offer plenty of storage space for lightweight gear.
Pros
- Rugged and durable
- Great straight line speed
- Lots of room for storage

The Lifetime 10-Foot Fishing Kayak is a rigid fishing kayak with four rod holders, two on each side. It also has a child seat molded into the body, so you and your child can enjoy an outing on the water, a bonding experience that will stay with you for a lifetime.
This is an affordable, reliable kayak that can get you paddling without the need to spend a small fortune. That said, the storage compartment isn’t very convenient. It only has a single access point: a six-inch screw-down cap near the stern.
But it runs the full length of the boat, which means your gear is liable to roll up towards the bow, and you won’t be able to access it until you’re back on dry land. Just lash your supplies to the top of the boat, and you’ll be better off.
Pros

This compact kayak weighs only 25 pounds, which is on the light end for the weight capacity. That said, it’s fairly wide for the length, so it doesn’t remain straight easily at high speeds. It’s better designed for slow maneuvering in tight spaces, like fishing around a pier.

Bottom Line
So how do you find the ideal big kayak for your needs? Look at the features.
The most important difference you’ll notice is that some kayaks are inflatable, while others are constructed from a rigid material. Don’t underestimate an inflatable kayak for large person sizes. They are actually very stable.
Many designs are quite durable and can even tackle whitewater rapids with an experienced paddler. Inflatable kayaks are also more easily portable, although they’re heavy enough that they limit how much other gear you can carry.
Rigid kayaks are more durable, but typically weigh much more than their inflatable brethren, and you’ll need a roof rack to take them anywhere. That said, you won’t have to worry about your kayak developing a slow leak.
This means you can stay outdoors on the water for longer, which is a great feature whether you’re fishing or just relaxing. You’ll also get a better price for the same quality since well-engineered inflatable kayaks are pricey to produce.
