Zeroing in a new sight can be a frustrating experience. Unless it’s already reasonably accurate out of the box – which would only happen by coincidence – you need to start with the target just a few yards away in order to even hit the 10-ring, never mind the bullseye. You’ll then need to keep moving the target back, fine-tuning your scope as you go until you’re slagging dimes at a hundred yards or more.

One way to make the process far less painful is to use a boresight laser, which is why we’ve put together a list of the best laser bore sights. In making our selections, we’ve tried to find at least one sight for every common caliber, and several that will fit the most popular calibers, like .223 Remington and 9mm. We’ve also tried to cover a broad price range, so there will be something here that fits every budget.

Features

  • SPECS: Class IIIR with power output of less than 5mW
  • EASE OF USE: Magnetic connection quickly and easily attaches to the muzzle of the gun and can be used on any caliber rifle or handgun
  • RELIABLE: Laser module permanently secured for dependable performance and hand-tuned during manufacturing to ensure accuracy
  • DURABLE: Machined aluminum body with soft rubber overmolding
  • INCLUDES: (1) battery, (1) reflective sighting grid, (1) plastic storage case

The Wheeler Professional green laser is clearly visible at 100 yards, even in broad daylight.

Key Features

  • Fits almost any rifle, shotgun, or handgun
  • Available with a green or red class III laser
  • Magnetic barrel mount
  • Takes one 123A battery (included)

The Wheeler Professional Laser Bore Sighter is available with a red or a green laser. They’re both a bit pricey, and the green is pricier, but we recommend going with the green version regardless. It’s visible at much longer ranges, up to 100 yards.

This sight has a magnetic mount, which sticks to the end of your barrel. Without the need for a barrel rod, you won’t have to worry about scratching the chrome lining. It also fits on virtually any barrel, making it one of the few bore sights that can be used to zero in a pistol.

It’s not quite as accurate as some other models since you need to center it manually. But it will still get you close enough to zero your scope with two shots.

Pros

  • Long-range visibility
  • Won’t scratch the inside of your barrel
  • Rugged design
  • Includes a molded plastic storage case

Cons

  • Not self-centering
  • Pricey

The magnetic barrel mounting system on this bore sight gets you on target without the need for a rod that may scratch the inside of your barrel.

Key Features

  • Fits .22 to .50 caliber rifles, and 12 to 20 gauge shotguns
  • Red class III laser
  • Foam padded barrel rod
  • Takes 2 custom rechargeable batteries (included)

The SiteLite is a red laser bore sight that’s designed to fit almost any rifle or shotgun, from .22 caliber to 12 gauge. It features a foam-padded barrel rod, with multiple pads that are sized for most common calibers. This simultaneously keeps it centered, and protects your barrel from any scratching.

It includes SiteLite’s smartphone app, which can quickly generate a printable target for any caliber, load, and range. With a custom target, you’ll be able to compensate for ballistic drop much more easily than you will with a standard target from Wal Mart or your local gun shop.

It will fit in long-barreled pistols, but not compact pistols. The 3 ¾-inch rod is too long for most of those models.

Pros

  • Won’t scratch the inside of your barrel
  • Includes a smartphone app
  • Includes multiple barrel adapters
  • Lifetime manufacturer’s warranty

Cons

  • Too long for compact pistols
  • Pricey

This bore sight is used by the US Navy and Marine Corps Aviation Unit weapons.

Features

  • BRIGHTNESS: Features a 5mW peak, 630-670nm, Class 3A visible red laser that is in conformance with and complies with 21 CFR 1040.10 with a max power output of "5mW" for a "Class 3R Red Laser" - the brightest beam allowed by law
  • EASE OF USE: Bore sight fits into the barrel of the unloaded firearm using the included caliber adapters – Turn bore sight on and align scope, iron sights, or laser sight with the beam coming from the bore sight
  • CONVENIENT: Includes daylight laser target for easy adjustments
  • COMPATIBLE: Works with all LaserLyte laser trainer targets
  • FITS: .22-.50 caliber firearms

The LaserLyte Kit’s barrel rod is only 3 inches long, making it suitable for most pistols.

Key Features

  • Fits .22 to .50 caliber rifles, .12-.20 gauge shotguns, and most pistols
  • Red class III laser
  • Aluminum barrel rod with plastic bore adapters
  • Takes 3 BAT-393 batteries (included)

The LaserLyte Universal Laser Bore Sight Kit is a barebones, easy-to-use bore sight that fits most rifles, shotguns, and pistols. The aluminum barrel rod has a flared design. Simply press it into your barrel until it fits snugly, and zero in your scope. For shotguns, you can use the plastic bore adapters to get a snug fit.

The downside of this barebones design is that the aluminum rod can potentially scratch the chrome lining on your barrel. The laser is also fairly weak, only useful out to about 25 yards in daylight. The batteries are also an unusual size, making them difficult to find in local stores. That said, this is an affordable kit, it takes just seconds to set up, and it’s short enough to accommodate pistol barrels 3 inches and longer.

Pros

  • Suitable for most pistols
  • Easy to use
  • Affordable

Cons

  • Hard to replace batteries
  • Limited range
  • Can potentially scratch your barrel

This bore sight takes only seconds to set up and comes at a reasonable price.

Features

  • Reliable and durable
  • Fastest gun zeroing and sighting system
  • Reduce wasted cartridges and shells
  • Compact and lightweight

The Sightmark fits in your rifle’s chamber, so there’s no chance of it scratching your barrel.

Key Features

  • Fits .308 and .243 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor, and other .308-based chambers
  • Red class III laser
  • Fits in your rifle’s chamber
  • Takes 2 AG5 batteries (included)

The Sightmark Boresight is a red laser bore sight that’s the same shape and size as a necked down .308 cartridge. It’s designed to fit in your rifle’s chamber, so it won’t scratch your barrel’s chrome lining. Because it’s a .308, it also fits in chambers that are based on the .308, such as .243 Winchester and 6.5 Creedmoor.

This laser bore sight is exceptionally accurate, since it fits right in your chamber, just as a live cartridge does. The laser is visible to 50 yards on a paper target, or out to 100 yards on a reflective target. Needless to say, it will get you inside the 10-ring easily anywhere in this range, allowing you to zero your sight quickly and easily.

Pros

  • Long-range visibility
  • Exceptional accuracy
  • Won’t scratch your barrel
  • Affordable

Cons

  • Only fits .308 and similar chambers

This laser bore sight is ideal for zeroing in your hunting rifle.

The GoZier Tactical Bore Sight is the third cartridge-style bore sight on our list. It’s sized for .223 Remington, and will also work in 5.56×45mm NATO chambers. Like other cartridge-style bore sights, it’s extremely accurate. The laser is visible at long ranges for a red dot, as far as 100 yards under ordinary daylight conditions.

This is an ideal bore sight for your AR, but make sure to take the batteries out when it’s not in use. There’s no “off” button, so they’ll run dead quickly if left in.

Pros

  • Long-range visibility
  • Exceptional accuracy
  • Won’t scratch your barrel
  • Lifetime warranty
  • Affordable

Cons

  • No “off” button
  • Only fits .223 Remington and similar chambers

This laser bore sight is perfect for sighting in your AR.

Bottom Line

In our search for the best laser bore sighter, we’ve covered a lot of ground. We’ve looked at green bore sights, which are highly visible at long distances. We’ve also looked at red bore sights, which tend to cost less in units that have comparable accuracy to their green counterparts. Ultimately, the best bore sight is going to be the one that works best for your gun and your budget.

One thing we haven’t mentioned is that a boresight is only going to be pinpoint accurate at point-blank range. Beyond that, they can’t account for the ballistic drop. So you can’t just line up your scope with your boresight at 100 or 200 yards and call it a day. Use the boresight as a benchmark, but follow up by firing live ammunition at the target to account for sighting at different ranges.
