Underwater scooters used to be the sort of thing you only saw in James Bond movies, but they are much more commonplace now. Designed to drag you through the water, a sea scooter means you can swim and explore the underwater world effortlessly. This makes them ideal for kids who aren’t strong swimmers, adults with mobility issues, and anyone who wants to go further with less effort.

But, with so many models available, which is the best underwater scooter?

For this review, we have tried and tested six of the most popular options. Each one has a good level of performance, a decent battery life, and is, of course, highly rated for safety.

Some are “big kid’s toys,” while others are much more professional pieces of kit. Whatever you want from a sea scooter, we’ve got the model for you.

The industry leading sealing and waterproofing technology also guaranteed for the best user experience, which allows the deepest range at 40M (131 ft ).
  • CONVENIENT: Small in size but with large energy. The total weight of 3.5 kgs makes it easy for everyone to carry. Only 20% of the size of conventional DPVs in both size and weight. FAA compliant batteries also allows easy to swap spare batteries.

Despite its compact size and light weight, this underwater scooter is powerful and has a good battery life. It also charges fast so you can be back in the water in double-quick time. The unique dual motor set up makes it easier to handle and more stable than most single propeller sea scooters.

Key Features

  • Top speed 4mph
  • Two-hour charging time
  • 60-minute battery life
  • Two gears for increasing range
  • Built-in waterproof smartphone mount
  • Low battery alert
  • Weighs 7.5 lbs.
  • Safety leash provided

This is one of the few scuba scooters that you could take on a plane. It’s light and compact, so it won’t take up much room in your luggage. In addition, the batteries are FAA-approved. In the water, it’s fast and agile, and very easy to use. With two speeds to choose from, it’s up to you if you go fast or slow, with slower speeds making the batteries last longer.

Pros

  • Very easy to use
  • Stable, streamlined design
  • Good performance
  • Very kid-friendly
  • Suitable for adults too

Cons

  • The battery runs down more quickly at top speed

Providing you can restrain yourself and use the slower gear, this sea scooter should provide you with an hour of use before it needs recharging. But, if you’re a speed demon, you’ll run it down in as little as 20 minutes. However, for its size and weight, this is a very impressive scuba scooter.

For fun in the water, a sea scooter is hard to beat. This streamlined model looks great and has the performance to match. Light and easy to use, this underwater scooter has a wide number of applications, from snorkeling to scuba to spearfishing.

Key Features

  • Compact, twin-propeller design
  • Positive buoyancy in salt and freshwater
  • Weight 7.7 lbs.
  • Top speed 4 mph
  • Rated to 164 feet
  • 60-minute run time
  • Built-in action camera mount

Most recreational sea scooters are limited to a depth of 98 feet. That’s fine for snorkelers, but not so good for scuba divers. This model can take you down to 164 feet, making it ideal for exploring reefs and wrecks. And, with 26 pounds of thrust, it’ll get you down to your chosen depth quickly and effortlessly.

Pros

  • Light and compact for travel – even on planes
  • Very easy to use
  • Stable and fast
  • Excellent depth rating
  • Extra batteries available for uninterrupted use

Cons

  • Some concerns over reliability

It seems that when this product works, it’s brilliant, but some users have experienced mechanical breakdowns within a few months of use and had to have their scooter replaced. If these reliability issues are ever (or have been) remedied, this is an excellent underwater scooter for both kids and adults.

  • Eco-Friendly - MagicJet will not disturbance to the sea creatures, which brings you more immersive diving experience

While AquaRobotMan is one of the least well-known manufacturers of underwater scooters, they make several interesting and easy to use products. This model is fast, has a good battery life, and can be “stacked” with another scooter for even better performance.

Key Features

  • Top speed 4mph
  • 60-minute run time
  • Dive depth up to 164 feet
  • Interchangeable waterproof battery pack
  • Fully enclosed propeller
  • Three built-in camera mounts
  • LED battery level indicator

Providing you buy an extra power cell, you can swap batteries while still in the water, extending your range. That’s a handy feature for longer dives or when you don’t want to get out of the water so soon.

Pros

  • Very easy to use
  • Light and portable
  • Decent performance
  • Backed with a one-year warranty

Cons

  • The vertical design means this product is not as stable as other underwater scooters
  • Quite expensive

While this product works well as a single unit, it’s far better when paired with another. The design means it’s much more stable when used in twos. Used individually, it’s not so easy to grip with two hands. Still, it’s a good product that should provide hours of aquatic fun for both adults and kids.

Pros

  • Rugged design
  • Easy to control
  • Reliable
  • Suitable for bigger, heavier users

Cons

  • Quite loud
  • Not the best performer

If you want speed from your underwater scooter, this is probably not the model for you. But, if you’re happy cruising along at a sedate pace, the Yamaha RDS200 is highly recommended. It’s quite big and heavy, so not ideal for traveling, but for use closer to home, it’s a lot of fun.

This Yamaha sea scooter is a serious piece of kit. Powerful and with a long-lasting battery, it’s more than a toy and is suitable for scuba diving. While it is quite big and bulky, adults and older children will enjoy the freedom and fun this model provides.

Key Features

  • Weighs 18 lbs.
  • 0 mph top speed
  • Two-speed motor
  • 90-minute battery life
  • Depth rating of 100 feet
  • Adjustable buoyancy
  • Powered by a sealed lead-acid battery
  • Built-in action camera mount
  • Heavy-duty rubber hull covering
  • Fully enclosed propeller

At 18 pounds, this model from Yamaha is not lightweight. But, with neutral buoyancy, that weight is immaterial once you are in the water, and it not so heavy that you won’t be able to carry it to and from the water’s edge. But, for travel, this is not the ideal product. It weighs about twice as much as some of the more compact models on review.

Pros

  • Built to last
  • Excellent battery life
  • Decent performance
  • Lots of safety features
  • Very reliable

Cons

  • Quite loud
  • Not the cheapest sea scooter
  • Not very portable

While there are faster sea scooters available, none of them can touch this Yamaha for battery life. 90 minutes is very impressive and means you can spend a whole lot more time having fun in the water. Because of this, this scooter is suitable for scuba diving, even if you want to go quite deep.

Bottom Line

Underwater scooters are a lot of fun, and kids and adults will enjoy using them. With a scooter dragging you along, you can travel miles without exerting any energy, free to enjoy the sights of the underwater world.

Some scooters are designed for use on the surface with a snorkel. These are ideal for exploring shallow waters and staying close to the shore. They’re good for pool use too.

In contrast, more professional models can go down to 150-foot depths and can be used for scuba diving. Conversing energy on a dive means your oxygen will last longer, allowing for a more enjoyable dive.

Some sea scooters are faster than others, but in most cases, more speed means a shorter battery life. If you want to go for longer, going slower is usually the best option.

So, which underwater scooter is best for you? It depends on what you want to use one for. But, once you’ve made that decision, you’ll find the best model reviewed in this article!
